Royal underwear sells for £9,375

A pair of bloomers belonging to Queen Victoria has sold at auction for more than three times their original estimate.

The white silk underwear was expected fetch £3,000 but instead has sold for £9,375, including a buyer's premium of 25 per cent.

They were sold along with over 500 royal paintings, letters, furniture and other personal items at Edinburgh's Lyon & Turnbull auction house.

More than £3 million was made altogether from the collection which came from the contents of Old Battersea House, which is the London home of the US Forbes family.

While the publishing family currently reside in the house, over the years many famous visitors including former US president Ronald Reagan and actress Elizabeth Taylor have stayed at the property.

The bed in which the Hollywood icon slept in with her seventh husband Lord Fortensky, also made £9,375.
