Gasps of horror and dismay echoed round the fashion world yesterday as a designer brand finally unveiled its new $500 (£317) socks.
The crocheted socks have been deemed impractical as they are holey and un-washable, being stitched from mohair and alpaca wool.
As you would expect for that price, the socks are hand-knitted and are aesthetically interesting, featuring a multicoloured palette of purple, orange, blue and grey.
Most New Yorkers are baffled by the hosiery
, although some high-end fashion fans are taken with the socks.
MSN TODAY style editor Bobbie Thomas is not sure the new item will catch on.
"With any trend, you can be sure creative minds will explore the limits of luxury and a specific woman willing to splurge. However, the average American woman may not consider something so delicate with a short life span an 'investment' item," she said.Knee high socks
