Thousands support cancer research in pink socks

Thousands of breast cancer survivors and their friends, families and colleagues took to the streets of Newark this weekend to raise money for breast cancer research.

The annual fundraiser, entitled Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, saw people don pink socks, t-shirts and hats to show their support.

Newark was just one of the eight communities in New Jersey which held a five-kilometre charity walk this weekend and organisers are hoping to beat the $320,000 (£202,538) raised last year by the 9,000 participants.

The event was part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which takes place across the world during October.

Elsewhere in the US, the Edgwewood K-1 pee wee American football team are to don pink socks in their next game to show their support for breast cancer research, The Oxford Press reports.
