German footballer Mario Goetze is in hot water this week after wearing the wrong sports socks while playing in a World Cup qualifier against Ireland.
The sports star appeared on the pitch wearing socks from his own personal sponsor, rather than the national side's official supplier.
However, he insisted he was not trying to get his sponsor some extra publicity, saying that he was wearing them due to injury.
"These are compression socks which I have been wearing due to my injury," the midfielder, who has only recently returned to action after hurting his ankle in August, told Bild newspaper.
"I did not want to provoke or advertise anything. This will not happen again."
This is not the first time Goetze's choice of clothing has landed him in trouble. He was previously fined by his team Bayern Munich after appearing at an official presentation wearing a t-shirt which featured his personal sponsor's logo rather than that of the club supplier.
