Emily Watson gives retro a go

Emily Watson gives retro a go

British actress Emily Watson was clearly influenced by her latest role when she wore a pair of retro-looking tights on the red carpet last night.

The 47-year-old is playing the mother of Vera Brittain in Testament of Youth, which is based on the writer's memoir of love and loss during the First World War.

And Watson's choice of legwear at the premiere in London seemed in keeping with the vintage glamour that helps to add a touch of authenticity to the film.

Released on October 14, Testament of Youth takes audiences back to 1914, when Vera Brittain had to give up her dream of going to university to take up a nursing post.

It stars Swedish actress Alicia Vikander as Vera and Game of Thrones heart-throb Kit Harington as Roland Leighton, the poet and soldier who becomes her fiance.

But Watson appears to have taken the wartime world to heart, teaming her stylish tights with a black dress and a matching coat.

Hastings has socks appeal

Hastings has socks appeal

The people of Hastings and Bexhill are lending a hand to keep homeless feet warm after the launch of the twentieth annual Sock Appeal.

Ex-councillor Richard Stevens came up with the idea when a man said that a clothes and food distribution centre run by charity Surviving Christmas never had enough socks .

Now every year, in the run-up to Christmas, people around the Hastings and Bexhill area are encouraged to donate pairs of warm socks to homeless people, who can find enduring the winter months difficult.

Mr Stevens said: "Warm socks can prove to be a lifesaver if you are living on the streets or in cold conditions. It is sad to reflect that appeals such as this are still very much needed and appreciated in towns like ours."

On Christmas Day every year Richard takes all of the donated socks to a local YMCA where Surviving Christmas provides food and clothing to people who are disadvantaged, homeless or have nowhere else to go through the festive season.

Socks from the Sock Appeal are handed out to those who need them every day until December 27.

Queen Victoria's pants sell for £6,000

Queen Victoria's pants sell for £6,000

Bidders from around the world have battled it out to buy a pair of bloomers belonging to Queen Victoria.

In the end, the pair of pants, which measured 52 inches round, were bought by an Israel-based royal memorabilia collector for £6,000.

The garment was accompanied by a 66-inch chemise designed to be a perfect fit for the Queen.

Michael Hogben, of Westenhanger Auctioneers in Folkstone, Kent, said that in his 40-year career the pants were among the strangest items he had ever sold.

Mr Hogben said that he was surprised by the fierce competition for the item, which also attracted telephone bids from America.

Recently the Y-fronts worn by Walter White in the hit series Breaking Bad sold for £6,180 at an auction in the USA, while underwear belonging to Elvis and Michael Jackson has also recently been put under the hammer.

Sheffield steals 'the Rihanna look'

Sheffield steals 'the Rihanna look'

Most women in Sheffield look to Rihanna to provide them with fashion inspiration, according to a new poll.

Over six in 10 of those questioned at Meadowhall shopping centre prefer the Umbrella star's darkly audacious image to more modest, delicate personas.

Rihanna's much-mimicked rebellious stage presence includes the black fishnet tights she's seen sporting here at a gig at London's O2 Arena.

The 26-year-old star is equally at home wearing leggings and over-the-knee socks . The main thing is to stay confident, and being unselfconscious about what you are wearing is her fashion mantra.

Similarly, Meadowhall's clothes survey also shows three-quarters of Steel City ladies think of themselves as strong with an independent mind.

Under 5% of Sheffield women describe themselves as reserved.

The poll has been carried out to coincide with the start of the shopping centre's new fashion campaign across the autumn and winter. This celebrates the way that clothes can fit an individual's personality.

Why Kim's Wilde about wearing tights

Why Kim's Wilde about wearing tights

It's 33 years since Kim Wilde burst onto the pop scene with her smash hit Kids In America.

But the 53-year-old star shows no sign of losing her trademark smiling girlish looks at this week's big movie premiere.

Ballet is synonymous with tights , so it's fitting that the singer-turned-gardener arrived in trendy black tights to the opening of Soul Boys of the Western World, Spandau Ballet: The Film.

The eldest daughter of 1950s singer Marty Wilde wore a stunning black dress and shoes to complete the outfit.

London's Royal Albert Hall rolled out the red carpet for Tuesday's premiere of the movie about the 1980s group, whose hits include True, Gold and Musclebound.

George Hencken's new film is a no-holds barred documentary about the much-loved new romantic band.

Band members, Gary and Martin Kemp, Tony Hadley, John Keeble and Steve Norman were all in attendance. Keeble bucked his bandmates' trend of donning dashing tuxedos by wearing a blue velvety jacket and ripped jeans.

Lorna helps EastEnders win best soap

Lorna helps EastEnders win best soap

As an EastEnders actress, Lorna Fitzgerald should be used to cliffhangers.

So it will have come as second nature to her as she awaited the results of the Inside Soap magazine's awards ceremony this week.

She is pictured here on the red carpet before Wednesday's prestigious ceremony at Piccadilly's DSTRKT club, restaurant and lounge wearing black tights .

To complete the look, Fitzgerald, who plays Abi Branning in the BBC soap, is seen wearing a black and grey short-sleeved dress with panelled sides and black boots.

Fitzgerald, 18, who has been in the east London-based drama for eight years, joined stars of other soaps to battle it out for the awards.

Her performances helped make it a good night for EastEnders, winning more awards than any other show in its genre. Not only did it win best soap, it also claimed best family (the Carters), best actor (Danny Dyer as Mick Carter) and sexiest female (Jacqueline Jossa's Lauren Branning).

Hollyoaks' Nikki Sanderson, 30, who plays Maxine Minniver, took home the best actress trophy.

Chef cooks up a storm in black tights

Chef cooks up a storm in black tights

Fashion was on the menu last night as a top celebrity chef hit the red carpet at a prestigious event in London.

Rachel Khoo arrived at the Evening Standard's The 1000 Most Influential Londoners 2014 event wearing an outfit every bit as creative as her mouthwatering sweet treats.

The 34-year-old wowed the crowds at the Francis Crick Institute on Thursday October 16 wearing black tights , black boots and a distinctive dress with an eye-catching kaleidoscope design of greens and blues. Her culinary projects have been seen across the world in places such as Buenos Aires, Paris, Milan, Berlin and Melbourne.

The Evening Standard list sees a panel of journalists, editors and critics rank London's most powerful people.

This year the judges placed Chancellor George Osborne at the top of the list, followed by Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

Other top 20 names included Victoria Beckham, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations and fashion guru, plus Amal Clooney, the human rights lawyer who has just married George Clooney.

Guy's gal looks great on red carpet

Guy's gal looks great on red carpet

Film director Guy Ritchie's fiancee needed no direction in the fashion department when they appeared for the premiere of a new film.

Jacqui Ainsley looked sizzling in sexy black tights , a floral-patterned shift dress and black boots.

She completed the look with a small pink purse as she arrived at London's Battersea Evolution for the opening of Fury.

Richie went for the dapper look in a smart dinner suit and a matching bow tie.

London Film Festival's latest gala offering gave the opportunity for celebrity-watchers to view model Ainsley back in the public eye again three months after she gave birth to the couple's third baby.

The Snatch, Revolver and Swept Away director already has a two-year-old son, Rafael, and and 18-month-old daughter, Rivka, with Ainsley. Richie also has two other sons with his former wife Madonna.

Fury features Brad Pitt as a Sherman tank commander during the Second World War and is directed by David Ayer.

Comedians out for Northern Soul premiere

Comedians out for Northern Soul premiere

Steve Coogan and fellow comedian John Thomson turned out to attend a gala screening of their new film Northern Soul.

Former Fast Show star Thomson was spotted on the red carpet with his wife Samantha, who looked stunning in a black dress and flesh-coloured ladies' tights .

Meanwhile Coogan revealed that he still has plans for his most successful creation to date, Alan Partridge.

Following several successful TV series, Partridge proved just as successful on the big screen last year with Alpha Papa. Coogan said he plans to do "a few more shows" on the TV before laying him to rest and pursuing other projects.

Coogan's latest film Northern Soul tells the story of the 1970s dance craze. In the film, the 48-year-old plays a secondary school teacher, a character which the actor said was inspired by a number of "sarcastic" teachers from his childhood growing up in the North West.

Coogan also confirmed he plans to take his popular The Trip series with Rob Brydon to the United States.

Shirley's poetry in motion

Shirley's poetry in motion

Scottish actress Shirley Henderson showed she had the write stuff on the red carpet last night.

She looked divine in a black, long-sleeved shift dress, heels and tights as she posed for photographers at the premiere of Set Fire To The Stars, about the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.

The 48-year-old, who is best known for her roles in Trainspotting and Bridget Jones's Diary, stars opposite Lord Of The Rings actor Elijah Woods.

Her latest film, shot in black and white, could not come at a more fitting time as bookworms all over the world celebrate Dylan Thomas's 100th birthday.

Poetry fans have been heading to special readings and exhibitions in their droves, while there have also been performances of Thomas's most loved work, his radio play Under Milk Wood.

Set Fire To The Stars is taking advantage of the trend, telling the story of the writer's first trip to America in the 1950s.

And Shirley was on trend herself at the Ham Yard Hotel in London last night, keeping with the monochrome theme in a devilishly dark dress.

Sarah Gadon rocks pale tights

Sarah Gadon rocks pale tights

When you play a vampire's wife in a new blockbuster, you're supposed to look a bit pale.

And Sarah Gadon has lived up to expectations, wearing white tights to the premiere of Dracula Untold in London.

She's pictured here with co-star Luke Evans in fashion tights and a sleeveless black silk and white lace floral dress.

Gadon, 27, is seen on a suitably blood-red carpet on the arm of Evans, who plays her husband, Vlad the Impaler/Dracula, in the film.

And it was a case of once bitten, forever smitten for the crowds who gathered outside the entrance to Odeon West End in Leicester Square, London.

Gadon is also sporting crimson lipstick befitting a bloodsucker and some killer black high heels.

Evans is pictured in a dapper grey suit with an eye-catching purple tie.

Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance, who plays the Master Vampire, also attended the screening in an immaculate lounge suit.

Students donate socks to help the homeless

Students donate socks to help the homeless

A charity set up to provide socks to homeless people has received more than 12,000 pairs since it began less than a year ago.

US student Adina Lichtman was inspired to start Knock Knock Give a Sock in November while she was doing voluntary work giving sandwiches to people living on the streets of New York.

One of them told her another thing homeless people really needed was socks.

The NYU Silver School of Social Work student started knocking on doors in her hall of residence to ask for any socks her fellow students could spare, eventually donating 40 pairs.

She then recruited one person per floor to do the same, started a Facebook page and helped a friend start a similar collection at Columbia University.

Lichtman says students can be a lazy bunch, but she thinks the collections took off because they can help the homeless with very little effort.

Around 95% of students will give you a pair of socks if you ask them, she says.

The charity collected 4,000 pairs in its first four months and gave them to hospitals to hand out to homeless people when they had problems with their feet.

Now she wants all college students to donate at least one pair to the cause.

Lichtman says although socks are useful, people tend not to donate them without specifically being asked because they don't think anyone would want their socks.

They are more likely to give other items of clothing instead, she says.

What many people don't know is homeless people can wear four or five socks every night to keep their feet warm - especially when it is particularly cold, according to Lichtman.

Fern Britton gives it some welly

Fern Britton gives it some welly

Never let it be said that TV presenter Fern Britton is anything but practical.

She arrived at London's Intercontinental Hotel for the Women Of The Year Awards 2014 yesterday wearing a printed shirt, leggings and - in a bid not to beaten by the bad weather - wellies.

The 57-year-old, who is married to TV chef Phil Vickery and has four children, rubbed shoulders with the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Lorraine Kelly.

It was all in honour of the 60th annual awards show for the year's most extraordinary women, which praises their achievements in bringing serious issues into the public spotlight.

Winners included single mother activist Jack Monroe, campaigner Fahma Mohamed and women's rights campaigner Diana Nammi.

And Fern, best known for her work on ITV's This Morning, was seen to celebrate in fine style, looking positively exuberant as she posed for photographers on the red carpet - despite the rain outside!

FKA twigs socks it to 'em at awards

FKA twigs socks it to 'em at awards

Mercury Music Prize nominee FKA twigs is causing waves across the entertainment industry - not only for her skills as a singer-songwriter, but for her reported relationship with Twilight star Robert Pattinson.

Although she lost out to hip-hop trio Young Fathers for the big prize, her nomination has seen a huge boost to her record sales.

She rocked a pair of over-the-knee socks on the red carpet at the awards ceremony, held at Central London's Roundhouse venue in Camden.

The 26-year-old star, whose real name is Tahliah Barnett, had been among the favourites for the prize, on a list which included Damon Albarn, Bombay Bicycle Club, Jungle and Kate Tempest.

Her debut album, LP1, is available now and has been described as an exciting blend of hip-hop and electro.

Past winners of the Mercury Music Prize, given for best album by artists from the UK or Ireland, include Pulp, Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys.

Toast to Laura's fab style

Toast to Laura's fab style

She may have signed up to stay off the booze for Sober October, but that's not going to stop Laura Whitmore having fun - and looking great.

The 29-year-old presenter, best known for her work on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! NOW!, kept it sultry at an event at the House of Myla in London yesterday.

She wore a pair of black tights matched with a black jacket, heels and cropped jumper, adding one of this season's staples - the tartan skirt - for contrast.

Top lingerie brand Myla was celebrating its 15th birthday and the stunning Irish star did not disappoint celeb-watchers.

Whitmore has become something of a style icon, with her recent appearance at the London Fashion Week - where she was seen in a total of five outfits in one night - leading many to call her the best dressed there.

What's certain is that while Laura may be firmly on the wagon, we're falling head over heels for her fab style.

Fund-raising scarf stretches through town

Fund-raising scarf stretches through town

Members of a close-knit community in Leicestershire have created a 320-metre-long scarf to help their town.

Long enough to stretch right through Ashby-de-la-Zouch town centre, the colourful woollen scarf was made in just one week thanks to a team of more than 100 dedicated knitters.

Yvonne Rutler, who runs the Papillon Bleu shop in Ashby and supplied the material for the project, says the team got through hundreds of balls of wool.

The scarf - which even puts the long ones famously worn by 1970s Doctor Who actor Tom Baker in the shade - formed the highlight of the town's FABulous Fashion and Beauty Week.

Proceeds from the event will go towards providing Ashby with a new community centre, a project it is hoped will be completed within five years.

Other events have included live mannequins in the windows of various shops and businesses in the town.

Organiser Lorna Titley said the week had brought the town centre to life.

Lauren's one step ahead on the red carpet

Lauren's one step ahead on the red carpet

Lauren Laverne gave a leg-up to The Imitation Game at its London premiere last night, wearing a combination of black tights and a long, sparkling emerald coat.

The tights showed off the lithe legs of the former Radio 1 DJ, while contrasting with the square-shouldered, straight-edged coat.

Lauren Laverne has been hailed as a fashionista thanks to all of her on-trend red-carpet work and, with choices like this, it seems that she will keep striding the stylish path for some time to come.

As a recently published writer herself, Laverne will appreciate the plot of the film, which has a script that sold for a whopping $7 million.

The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as British code-breaking genius Alan Turing and Keira Knightley as Turing's fellow code-breaker and one-time fiancee Joan Clarke.

There have been rumours that Cumberbatch could get an Oscar nomination for his performance in the film, and SockShop want to nominate Laverne for her choice of tights at the premiere.

Sandie's Shaw looking good for 67

Sandie's Shaw looking good for 67

It's now nearly half a century since she delivered that rarest of things - a British Eurovision Song Contest winner.

But Sandie Shaw is still an iconic figure in the music world and at yesterday's Q Awards she proved that she's still got the looks even at 67.

The 1960s pop princess made her name performing barefoot, but this time she opted for something warmer with black tights and matching shiny dress and boots.

She is pictured here at Wednesday's awards with singer Sam Smith.

Smith, 22, hadn't even been born when Shaw landed Britain's first Eurovision success with Puppet on a String at the age of 17.

The pair are photographed at the music bash at the prestigious Grosvenor House hotel in Central London.

Smith, looking funky here in a grey suit and white shirt combo, didn't go home empty-handed. The Latch singer was voted best new act. Shaw retired from the music industry last year.

Dance craze hands success to fashion firm

Dance craze hands success to fashion firm

An American entrepreneur has made $8 million on the back of a craze for "gloving" - where nightclub revellers dance wearing gloves that light up.

Brian Lim had never heard of the trend until his girlfriend introduced him to it on the dance floor of a club in Los Angeles.

But now the 27-year-old has got the moves down to a fine art and his company EmazingLights has been ranked highly in a list of the most exciting up-and-coming new businesses.

Having developed the prototype for his first glove on a shoestring of just $113 , California-based Mr Lim has seen his firm grow to employ 43 workers and boast five stores.

A pair of EmazingLights electronic gloves can cost up to $120 but people wanting to wear something stylish on their hands without having to fork out that much should be able to find what they're looking for in SockShop's top collection .

Mr Lim said the passion generated by the dance floor craze had enabled him to recruit a workforce that really believes in the product.

And he is now hoping that passion will help his brand to go on to become the electronic dance music scene's equivalent of Nike.

Annie's the saint of Maverick style

Annie's the saint of Maverick style

Alternative style icon St Vincent (aka Annie Clark) lived up to her reputation at this week's Q Awards.

The 32-year-old Oklahoma-born guitar queen arrived at Wednesday's ceremony at London's Grosvenor House with a look of two halves.

The Now Now and Cheerleader star, sporting cherry lipstick, wore amazing black tights with matching high heels, handbag and sleeveless dress.

This contrasted deliciously with her light 1960s-style throw-around coat, understated pale make-up and distinctive grey hair.

Little wonder, then, that St Vincent scooped the Maverick gong at the ceremony for breaking convention and taking music to new boundaries.

She told journalists that she would not compromise her distinctive style and would continue to explore fresh creative fields.

This year saw the release of her critically acclaimed fourth album backed by stunning live shows plus musical tie-ups with indie stars The National and Talking Heads singer David Byrne.

Industry experts say she is as last getting well-deserved plaudits from outside her cult following.

Enjoying a Swift trip up The Shard

Enjoying a Swift trip up The Shard

Taylor Swift shook off any lingering effects of jet lag with a date at the top of The Shard on Thursday.

The singer, who arrived in London from the US earlier in the week, wore a black dress, black tights and black boots as she joined Capital FM DJs Dave Berry and Lisa Snowdon 1000ft above the city streets to do her bit for disadvantaged kids.

Alongside her appearances on X Factor and the Graham Norton Show, Swift took the time to support charity Global's Make Some Noise Day.

It is a good time for her to be in the UK as her single Shake It Off is currently at the top of the charts.

Despite her fame she was surprised to jump into a taxi and see her face on the front cover of Vogue magazine, before sharing how she felt with her fans via her Instagram account. She wrote that it was "wild" to be number one in the UK and see her face on the cover.

Picture-perfect premiere for Mr Turner

Picture-perfect premiere for Mr Turner

British actress Marion Bailey wowed crowds last night at the premiere of Mr Turner wearing a gorgeous pair of black tights .

She looked pretty as a picture during the red-carpet call for the film, which tells the story of 20 years in life of British artist JMW Turner.

The 59-year-old, who is perhaps best known for her roles in films such as Meantime, All Or Nothing and Vera Drake, plays the painter's lover Mrs Booth.

And she brought a touch of artistic elegance to Mr Turner's launch on Friday October 10, teaming her tights with a black dress, red high heels and a multi-coloured necklace.

She cut a fine figure with co-star Dorothy Atkinson, who sparkled in a silver jacket and black trousers.

The film is tipped to win big at this year's Oscars, so make sure you check it out when it's released across the UK on October 31.
