Lohan socks it to the man with stockings

Lohan socks it to the man with stockings
Just a couple of weeks after coming out of prison, Lindsay Lohan has courted more controversy with the outfit she wore to attended a meeting with her probation officer.

She went to the meeting at Santa Monica courthouse in California wearing a pair of leggings that resembled knee high socks, flannel shirt and tiny pair of shorts.

After doing her stretch in jail for drink driving, the Mean Girls actress has been spending time in rehab at the UCLA Medical Center.

Just one week after leaving rehab, however, she got into trouble again after allegedly rolling through a stop sign.

This choice of hosiery is not the first time the 24-year-old actress has ruffled a few feathers with her fashion look.

She was spotted out and about in New York before her prison sentence in a pair of interesting mid-calf sheer ladies socks.

Alba rocks the boat in Venice with black tights

Alba rocks the boat in Venice with black tights
Most people would associate the Venice Film Festival with glamorous dresses and chic haute couture.

However, Jessica Alba pitched up at the 69th edition of the international flick festival in little more than a short grey dress, denim jacket and black tights.

Maybe leggings would have been more appropriate, as tights can leave a girl a little exposed with such a short dress.

She rocked up on a white speed boat with other stars of the silver screen, including Natalie Portman and Quentin Tarantino, who looked every inch the cowboy in a checked shirt and Stetson.

In a recent appearance on the David Letterman show for CBS, Ms Alba revealed she has the legs not to need to worry about hosiery at all, wearing a flowing dress without the opaque tights she donned for Venice.

Model agency embraces shoes and socks look

Model agency embraces shoes and socks look
Women looking to embrace a growing fashion trend that one was once dubbed a faux pas have been offered a few tips on how to look chic by a model agency.

Models Direct has advised that women who want to team shoes with socks should try dark colours for this autumn and winter.

Ankle socks might be one option to try out first, especially with ankle or knee high boots rather than plunging into wearing high heels with cotton socks straight away.

Thigh high boots were a major trend last year, the agency, said and this look can be achieved this year for a bit less money by using knee high socks.

"Get really cosy by layering over the knee socks over tights in the season's subdued colours," Models Direct advised.

It also suggested that patterned tights might help to add a little interest to the ensemble.

Recent findings in Yorkshire suggest that the Romans wore walking socks with their sandals.

Can patterned tights make women over 50 look fab?

Can patterned tights make women over 50 look fab?
Looking stylish is still important to women over the age of 50, a fashion expert has said.

FabafterFifty.com editor Ceri Wheeldon said that older women "don't want to be frumpy, we absolutely want to be stylish but we don't want to be mutton dressed as lamb, we want to be age appropriate but with a bit of flair".

So, are women of a certain age branching out into buying women's hosiery that is more readily associated with the younger generation like fishnet tights or funky stockings?

Sales of swimwear and bikinis usually reserved for the under-30s may suggest just that, after Debenhams reported that sales of these items is soaring thanks to role models such as Goldie Hawn and Helen Mirren.

The store found that, when questioned on what type of swimwear they take on holiday, 71 per cent of women aged between 50 and 65 said they ditched a one-piece swimsuit in favour of a bikini.

Erie thieves caught 'sock-handed'

Erie thieves caught 'sock-handed'
A pair of daft burglars caused quite a scene in Pennsylvania this week when their attempts to rob someone's home were thwarted.

The pair was caught sock handed, having put the legwear over their hands in an attempt to prevent fingerprints from being left behind in the property.

Fortunately for the homeowner, the hapless pair of burglars had failed to realise that the man who lived in the house had only popped out for a short dental appointment, reports the Erie Times.

Police arrived promptly after the man called 911, having noticed that his gate and window screen had been left open.

The pair was subsequently caught, following an unsuccessful fleeing attempt and were arrested and charged with theft by unlawful taking, burglary, receiving stolen property and disorderly conduct.

Last month, Walletpop.com's Diane Wedner suggested some other unusual, yet lawful, uses for socks and stockings.

Some of the more strange, if practical, hints were using old stockings as an onion caddy, or a makeshift vacuum.

Cotton socks advised to rid smelly feet

Cotton socks advised to rid smelly feet
Men, it seems, can have the sort of feet that can put off even the most loving of girlfriends.

Some advice, however, has been offered to women who want to rid their men of their smelly feet.

Throw out man-made fibre such as nylon, advises the Daily Mirror's Catherine Hood, suggesting opting for natural cotton socks may be the best option.

"Socks and shoes made from synthetic fibres encourage moisture to build up and stop the feet breathing," she explains.

In addition, Ms Hood says that new liners for trainers and regular washing can help to reduce the pong.

"A little tea tree oil added to bath water helps clear bacteria and clear off any dry skin from the soles," she adds.

The advice chimes with that of the NHS, which tells people to change socks regularly and avoid nylon.

Did back-to-school socks boost retail sales?

Did back-to-school socks boost retail sales?
Consumer spending in the UK as a whole increased slightly in August, boosted mainly by the non-food, non-store sector that includes online, telephone and mail order sales, according to new figures.

While the overall sales last month rose by one per cent on a like-for-like basis compared to August 2009, it was the clothing sector that saw the real spending increase, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and KPMG report.

Parents ordering cotton socks for their children going back to school may have been one factor that saw a rise in the non-food, non-store sector, which was 17.8 per cent higher than a year ago.

"Back-to-school wear and the onset of autumn helped clothing and shoes produce a small overall improvement in non-food sales," explained BRC director general Stephen Robertson.

The news comes as analyst firm IMRG reports that Europe is leading the way with online shopping, accounting for a third of global e-retail trade.

Stacey Solomon shows off patterned tights

Stacey Solomon shows off patterned tights
Essex girl Stacey Solomon, best remembered for her confident performances on last year's X-Factor has shown off why she is still in the limelight.

In a new fashion shoot for Closer magazine, the diva revealed that she is no shrinking violet when it comes to women's hosiery either, sporting some patterned tights teamed up with leopard print pants.

The singer, who came third in the ITV show, is seen in another shot looking a bit posh in a tweed jacket and riding trousers.

Commenting on the shoot, she said: "I love it, I'm going straight out to buy it all. The high street is amazing these days."

Currently in Egypt on holiday, Miss Solomon let her fans know exactly how much she was enjoying herself on her Twitter account, describing Sharm el Sheik as "wicked" and boasting that she will be swimming with dolphins.

Tights 'remain fashion must-have'

Tights 'remain fashion must-have'
Some things just never go out of style, whether it's the classic little black dress or blue jeans.

And according to HealthNewsDigest.com, tights are one such wardrobe staple.

They can be teamed up with similar colours for a simple look or contrasting colours to make a strong statement.

Apparently many of the current season's looks are "suitably sheer" and include nude fishnet tights and patterned tights.

"Designers are showing sophisticated sheer tights that provide the perfect balance between sheer and opaque for effortless style from autumn, to winter, to spring," the article adds.

Fashion For Lunch writer Lindsey Anderson recently said that colourful leggings and funky tights would be this autumn's must-have legwear option.

"Funky tights have become the latest trend to cover up your pins, bringing a splash of colour to the dull autumn days ahead," she said.

Buy colourful socks, men told

Buy colourful socks, men told
For women with men in their life who are little fashion-impaired and in need of some wardrobe help, one idea leaps out that is easy and relatively cheap.

Buy colourful socks. That is the advice of the Chicago Tribune's Ellen Warren, who claims thing's like striped socks can "add some zip" to a look.

"It's amazing the compliments that otherwise boring dressers will accumulate with that unexpected jolt of colour and pattern at the ankle," she explains.

She says this is one of the easiest ways of crawling out of "the antediluvian fashion swamp", adding that such items do not even need to be tried on first.

Her comments come after the Daily Mail's Catherine Hood advised ditching nylon in favour of cotton socks to avoid smelly feet.

Pixie likes over the knee socks a Lott

Pixie likes over the knee socks a Lott
Pixie Lott's fashion sense has been hitting the headlines quite a lot in recent months.

The teenage pop sensation has been seen in tights and hold-up stockings at various gigs and events.

Now her eye for new trend is turned to ladies socks, turning up to a fashionable party in London in a chic little ensemble.

Pixie rocked up to the Juicy Couture event in a pair of grey over the knee socks that perfectly complemented a black mini dress and fur-lined black leather jacket.

While she may have looked a little orange, Pixie has just returned from Ibiza where she said she had lots of fun with "the crazzzy cats".

The singer, who has just filmed the video for her new song Broken Arrow, was snapped turning up for an interview with Radio 1 in a pair of hold-up stockings.

Thick tights 'can combat lace dress chill this winter'

Thick tights 'can combat lace dress chill this winter'
One of the summer's hottest trends, lace dresses, can be extended to the cold winter months with addition of thick tights or a pair of leggings, it has been claimed.

According to a blog post on very.co.uk, opting for some suitable women's hosiery will mean your favourite lace dress will be able to make an appearance as the weather turns decidedly colder.

"It's such a shame to leave it hanging in the wardrobe when it can be dressed up so easily for the cooler months," the blog says.

Nude tights, meanwhile, can be worn for a romantic evening while black opaque tights or velvet leggings can be teamed with a leather jacket and boots for a "biker babe look".

HealthNewsDigest.com recently pointed out that tights are a classic wardrobe must-have that will never go out of fashion.

Black socks 'a must for business shoes'

Black socks 'a must for business shoes'
A wardrobe black hole is not just the region where stray items end up never to be seen again, it is claimed.

Socks, usually just one of a pair of course, tend to be one of main things to go walkabout.

However, according to the Sydney Morning Herald's Mia Freedman, men in particular are guilty of another form of wardrobe black hole.

This is the inexplicable choice of white sports socks to wear with smart business wear and black shoes.

A pair of black cotton socks would be a much more suitable choice, Ms Freedman says.

"It's not at all fine and you're hurting the eyes of innocent people, so please stop with your black hole and buy some black socks for your black business shoes," she advises.

Meanwhile, another traditional fashion faux pas, wearing socks with sandals, seems to be coming into vogue.

Holmes and Lohan show off tights

Holmes and Lohan show off tights
With a four-year-old daughter to look after, not to mention a superstar actor for a husband, Katie Holmes is probably no stranger to having to buy socks for the family.

And at a recent screening of her new film The Romantics, the actress showed she knows how make tights look good.

Holmes, who is married to Tom Cruise, looked the part on the red carpet in her thick black tights, even if her co-stars chose to go for a bare leg approach.

Rebecca Lawrence and Malin Akerman both decided rock up to the event with no stockings or hosiery and in figure-hugging shift dresses.

Meanwhile, Lindsay Lohan has been modelling legwear for Italian fashion label Fornarina.

Taken before her stint in prison, the pictures show the 24-year-old actress in range of women's tights, including a risque pair of fishnet stockings.

Compression socks 'can suit everyone'

Compression socks 'can suit everyone'
The risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is something that many people familiar with flying are no doubt aware of.

However, according to compression expert Dr Akbar de Medici, so-called flight socks can benefit anyone engaged in sport or travel, who is pregnant or works in a job that requires them to be seated for long periods of time.

He explained that it is important to read the packet when buying these types of socks, as proper medical-grade compression should not be worn by people with poor circulation, badly controlled diabetes or children.

"A compression sock is basically a tight sock, which should go all the way up to your knee from your foot," added Dr Medici.

"Squeezing your lower limb will affect the way your muscles work and the way your blood flows."

The British Cardiovascular Society recently urged people at a high risk of DVT to wear this form of legwear when flying.

Are tan tights better than bare legs?

Are tan tights better than bare legs?
As winter approaches, thoughts about waxing and fake tan on the legs become just a distant memory.

The colder months make wearing tights less of an option and more of a necessity as women hide away their pins for at least six months.

However, there is one summer-related question that Elle readers are being asked: Would you rather wear tights or go without?

For three-quarters (74 per cent) of women, a good wax and a dose of light fake tan is the look of choice.

The remainder say they depend on sheer tights in summer.

A survey of 1,750 women earlier this year from Charnos, when the warm months were being eagerly awaited, found the opposite, with 81 per cent saying they prefer tan tights as a way of looking bronzed.

Women's underwear sales up

Women's underwear sales up
Brits are shopping and spending more online, new figures show, as the internet retail sector saw double digit year-on-year growth in August.

Sales of women's underwear increased by nearly a third, with the lingerie sector seeing sales up by 29 per cent last month compared to August 2009, the latest IMRG/Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index shows.

Socks may also have been bought in greater numbers, with the clothing, footwear and accessories sector as a whole growing by 24 per cent year-on-year.

Overall, Brits spent £4.4 billion online in August, up 15 per cent on the same month in 2009 and continuing the level of year-on-year growth seen throughout 2010.

IMRG director of information Tim Spooner commented: "With 31 million UK consumers now shopping online, the internet continues to be a lucrative channel for retailers that can adapt to shoppers’ changing behaviour during these uncertain times."

The news comes after analysis firm Verdict Research suggested that sales of clothing increased in June because of the hot weather.

Tights come out as winter is on the way

Tights come out as winter is on the way
There are some very obvious signs from human behaviour that the warm glow of summer is receding and winter is beginning to take hold, according to the Guardian's Laura Barnett.

One of these is the sudden appearance of tights, she says, as women apparently ditch the bare-leg look for any kind of hosiery, from leggings to stockings.

Legs, whether tanned and bare or porcelain and spotty, start to disappear as opaque tights come out, she explains.

"But look on the bright side: tights are a godsend if, like me, you needed weeks to pluck up the courage to get your legs out in the first place," she adds.

Thick tights can allow women to wear their favourite lace dress in the cold months of winter, according to a blog post on very.co.uk.

Lily Allen enjoying maternity tights as sober life shows its merits
Lily Allen, the singer who has recently announced she is pregnant, is enjoying life without alcohol, cigarettes and going out, it has been reported.

The singer told the Daily Mirror that being sober has opened her eyes and that she is excited about becoming a mother.

Ms Allen also suggested she may have had to order some new underwear, claiming that her bra size has increased.

"My body's changing all the time and I've got to just embrace it. I'm growing all over. I've been wearing sexy maternity tights. I'm so glamorous it's unreal," she told the newspaper.

Her comments come not that long after she was spotted wearing a pair of leopard-print tights when she was three months pregnant, just a few days after she fell in fell over in a hotel and suffered whiplash.

Thigh-high sock tips for winter

Thigh-high sock tips for winter
As summer recedes into the memory and women start to cover up their legs to stay warm, there is at least one option that means short skirts can be comfortably worn in winter while staying at the height of fashion, it is claimed.

Over the knee socks are at their best when worn on petite and slim women as they can give the appearance of being taller, explains Lokemun Magar on Helium.com.

"If you are short and have thick thighs, it is often advisable to wear your socks cut just at or just above, the knee and wear them with shorter skirts, pants or shorts to give an elongated look," she writes.

Writing in the Guardian recently, Laura Barnett explained that the appearance of tights and leggings is a sure sign that winter is on the way.

Desperate housewife Eva Longoria has been in Paris with her hubby Tony Parker, the city where the couple wed back in 2007.

The Texan hottie showed us why she is a fashion icon for many, sporting a black mini dress and a pair of knee high socks peeping out over the tops of her boots.

She was snapped by photographers in the legwear as the couple were heading to the NJR radio studios for an interview.

Recently, the actress called for reforms to US labour laws to protect children, after claiming that the kids who feed the world's richest nation go to bed hungry, Agence France Presse reports.

Shape wear 'a big trend in underwear design'

Shape wear 'a big trend in underwear design'
There is a growing trend in the fashion industry that is going to be a "big thing" over the next few seasons, it has been claimed.

So-called shape wear is the biggest thing in ladies underwear design, according to Dr Gillian Proctor, programme leader for Contour Fashion at De Montfort University.

"We all know that wearing fantastic lingerie underneath whatever you are wearing even if it is a pair of jeans makes you feel great," she said.

Ms Proctor pointed out that having the right underwear can make all the difference, suggesting that seduction requires lingerie to "does the job" but also has that "sensual factor" as well.

A recent survey from Gossard found that six out of ten men in the UK have ended up in trouble with their partner for buying them the wrong-sized underwear.

Socks and underwear expected for Christmas

Socks and underwear expected for Christmas
Children may be expecting something good for Christmas this year and Santa is no doubt already receiving the first of many letters from hopeful youngsters.

However, adults should expect nothing more exciting than socks and underwear to appear in their Christmas stockings this year, the new president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart has said.

Speaking at a conference, Bill Simon explained that a tough economy in the US means many will be scaling back on buying presents.

"So for all you adults, I think you should plan for socks and underwear," he said.

Mr Simon added that he expects to see a very competitive Christmas selling season.

An article for Helium.com recently offered a few tips on what to wear this winter to jeep feet warm while staying stylish.

Over the knee socks are one option that was described as helping to give shorter women the appearance of longer legs.

Smelly socks save helpless hound

Smelly socks save helpless hound
A pet pooch stranded down a 60-foot mine shaft has been rescued by the most unusual of means, it has been reported.

The Daily Mirror has reported on the "miraculous" escape of Bean, a two-year-old Jack Russell who was left stranded.

A quick-thinking RSPCA inspector came up the idea of using socks to entice the dog into a pet cage that was lowered down.

Apparently, the familiar smell of his owner's feet was enough to encourage Bean into the cage and be raised to safety.

His owner John Power told the newspaper "It's miraculous that he has survived this unscathed."

Recently, socks came to the rescue of a homeowner in Pennsylvania, when a pair of hapless thieves were caught with mens socks on their hands, in an effort to avoid leaving finger prints.

Alba or Wintour, who wore their tights best?

Alba or Wintour, who wore their tights best?
Deciding between Jessica Alba and Anna Wintour, that is the choice for style-conscious visitors to heatworld.com.

One is the US star of numerous hit films including Sin City and Fantastic Four, the other is the British-born editor of Vogue and inspiration behind the Devil Wears Prada.

It seems the pair have at least one thing in common, having been snapped in almost identical outfits.

The website is asking people to decide on who wore an outfit of a red and black lip print dress teams with black tights best.

"Alba wore hers with opaque tights and Gucci heeled Mary-Janes", while "with her trademark bob immaculate, Anna added a slick of rosy lippy and kept her jewellery minimal," the website notes.

For her latest film, it seems Jessica Alba has no need of any form of legwear, appearing naked in Machete, which also stars Lindsay Lohan.

Mum launches socks for soldiers campaign

Mum launches socks for soldiers campaign
Soldiers serving in Afghanistan face all kinds of hardships, not least of which is the country's changing weather, which can be blisteringly hot in the desert and freezing cold up in the mountains.

This is why one mother of a soldier serving with the Iowa Army National Guard, who is about to be deployed to Afghanistan, is launching a campaign to collect socks for troops.

According to KIMT News 3, Julie Crail is behind the Sock it to Our Soldiers campaign, which is raising money to buy good quality mens socks for her son Jason and his fellow troops.

"Like Jason said the socks that get supplied to us our adequate, but they don't keep them as comfortable and their feet as dry. It's just like one of the little comforts from home," she told the news provider.

Other concerned mothers have started similar initiatives, such as Dot Glassey, who led a project that collected 1,600 pairs of socks for British soldiers in Afghanistan, reported the Warrington Guardian.

Can patterned tights create a unique style?

Can patterned tights create a unique style?
Women over the age of 50 should not be afraid to create their own style and must definitely not be a slave to fashion, one lifestyle expert has claimed.

According to FabafterFifty.com editor Ceri Wheeldon, women of a certain age can make themselves look younger by "injecting some colour and trendy accessories".

Patterned tights may be one way of achieving this, as can colourful striped socks.

Ms Wheeldon added: "Invest in some well-tailored pieces that fit really well and are a flattering cut. Accessories are a great way of adding style and drama to an outfit."

She went on to say that a three-quarter sleeve length is the most flattering, especially for women who are starting to bulge around the waist.

Her comments on older women's style come after designer Giles Deacon used 71-year-old model Veruschka in his London Fashion Week show recently.

Is cask ale shedding its socks and sandals image?

Is cask ale shedding its socks and sandals image?
Cask, or real, ale has always been associated with an older sector of society, usually involving men in flat caps wearing socks and sandals.

Now it seems, however, that this image is changing, after new figures show that young people are ditching chilled lagers for warm, flat beer.

According to the Cask Report, although there has been a two per cent decline in the UK beer market, cask ale drinking has gone up by five per cent.

Moreover, drinkers aged 18 to 24 are increasingly opting for a traditional pint, with 17 per cent more in this age range enjoying cask ale.

Although the figures suggest a changing image, the trend of young women wearing ladies socks with a pair of sandals or open-toed shoes is making a comeback, with the likes of Burberry and Dior dabbling in the eccentric legwear combo.

Perhaps the image of socks and sandals and real ale is here to stay.

Thick black tights 'are glorious'

Thick black tights 'are glorious'
One fashion agony aunt has given her tips on what is the best choice for ladies' legs and what should under all circumstances be avoided.

Thick black tights are "glorious", especially ones made of cashmere, according to the Guardian's Hadley Freeman.

She says this type of women's hosiery is both "cosy and flattering" and can come in a range of colours such as pale grey, heather and tan.

Meanwhile, tan tights are apparently not Ms Freedman's favourite, saying that wearing this legwear option will not make anyone look like they have a tan.

"If you're wearing tights, embrace the tights!" she advised.

And it seems that a majority of women may agree with her, after a poll of Elle readers showed that 74 per cent prefer to go for a good wax and light dose of fake tan instead of sheer tights.

Red socks to fly in honour of naval hero

Red socks to fly in honour of naval hero
Lieutenant-Commander Colin de Mowbray, who died suddenly earlier this year, is to be remembered with a unique sailing homage.

Red socks will be flown from the backstays of eight boats taking part in a regatta at Lymington this Saturday (October 2nd).

The Red Socks Regatta is being held in memory of the former naval officer, who became operations director for the Clipper Round the World Race, because of his penchant for this type of mens socks.

He passed away in July after a career in the navy spanning 30 years that included being second-in-command of HMS Alacrity during the Falklands War and his receiving of an MBE.

It was recently reported by KIMT News 3 that a mother of a US soldier due to be sent to Afghanistan is raising funds to buy socks to send to troops in the country.
