Is cask ale shedding its socks and sandals image?
Cask, or real, ale has always been associated with an older sector of society, usually involving men in flat caps wearing socks and sandals.

Now it seems, however, that this image is changing, after new figures show that young people are ditching chilled lagers for warm, flat beer.

According to the Cask Report, although there has been a two per cent decline in the UK beer market, cask ale drinking has gone up by five per cent.

Moreover, drinkers aged 18 to 24 are increasingly opting for a traditional pint, with 17 per cent more in this age range enjoying cask ale.

Although the figures suggest a changing image, the trend of young women wearing ladies socks with a pair of sandals or open-toed shoes is making a comeback, with the likes of Burberry and Dior dabbling in the eccentric legwear combo.

Perhaps the image of socks and sandals and real ale is here to stay.
