Is class of 2014 the best dressed ever?

Is class of 2014 the best dressed ever?

New students are putting their best foot forward - being dubbed history's best dressed new university intake.

From sporty socks to fashionable patterned or black tights , from stockings to comfortable leggings , September's freshers are putting on the style from their feet up.

In fact, they're splashing the cash like never before, according to a new survey on university fashion.

The poll finds that over one in four students are arriving at uni for the first time with wardrobes valued in excess of £2,000.

This totally turns on its head the age-old stereotype of university-goers wearing ageing boots, scruffy T-shirts and jeans, and jumpers in need of darning.

More than a quarter (28%) say they are heading off to campus with designer brands in their suitcase - with the highlights to be unleashed on the world during Freshers' Week festivities. Around 7% expect to arrive with clothes worth a total of under £500, while 83% claim there is pressure to create good first impressions with what they wear.

Johnny Tuxedo, the dinner suit and tuxedo specialist, carried out the research.

Union Jacks loud and proud at Gleneagles

British golf fans showed off their colours as Europe beat the United States to claim another Ryder Cup win.

Union Jack socks were among the patriotic items worn by the thousands of supporters at Gleneagles in Scotland over the weekend, while flags were draped over shoulders and faces were painted blue, red and white.

Led by captain Paul McGinley, the European players - themselves sporting blue and white clothing - brushed aside their transatlantic opponents 16½-11½ to make it eight wins out of the last 10 Ryder Cups.

Welsh rookie Jamie Donaldson beat Keegan Bradley 4&3 to take Europe to the 14½ needed to win the Cup outright, having led 10-6 going into the final day on Sunday, to spark jubilant celebrations in the crowd gathered around the 15th green.

The players, including the likes of Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter and Justin Rose, also celebrated long into the night.

Serena Williams makes fashion week debut

Serena Williams makes fashion week debut

Serena Williams has ditched her racket in favour of the catwalk.

The tennis ace, fresh from her triumph at the US Open, recently showed off her spring 2015 collection at New York Fashion Week.

A sleeveless long sweatshirt with the letter "S" on the front and leopard print leggings were among the new outfits on display.

Other attire included zipped, slinky mini-dresses, open run, faux fur jackets and jersey-knit dresses.

Fashion icon Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, was watching from the front row, as were a host of big names such as supermodel Beverly Johnson, actor Boris Kodjoe and comedian Marlon Wayans.

Williams is no stranger to the world of fashion, having made the industry her bit on the side for a number of years, and the fact that Wintour chose to attend her runway debut at the esteemed event shows she has most definitely arrived.

A rapturous round of applause met the 32-year-old as she took to the stage at the end of the show.

Tight-spot Fielding spotted in tights

Tight-spot Fielding spotted in tights

Ghost-hunter Yvette Fielding is used to finding herself in tight spots in the pursuit of the paranormal.

But she recently found herself spotted in black tights for the star-studded UKTV Live showcase at a prestigious London gallery.

Most Haunted presenter Fielding, 45, wore a distinctly monochrome outfit at last week's event at Howick Gallery.

The black-and-white thigh-high combo couldn't quite steal the show for the former Blue Peter hostess, however.

For larger-than-live US celebrity David Hasselhoff was also in attendance. The former Baywatch star had the audience in stitches with an impersonation of John Cleese doing his Monty Python silly walks.

But celebrity watchers from The Mail thought Hasselhoff was himself upstaged by a Welsh girlfriend reportedly 28 years his junior, Hayley Roberts.

TV naturalist, Life on Earth legend David Attenborough was also in attendance. Sir David, 88, staged an informative Q&A session.

Wildlife presenter Nigel Marven appeared with a vibrant, exotic-looking panther chameleon.

Pete Smith, operations director at Coca-Cola Enterprises Morpeth, said: "This is an exciting new development for Morpeth.

"The factory already has a proud history of producing high quality water for consumers across Great Britain."

Fashion tights loved best of all at Bestival

Fashion tights loved best of all at Bestival

Wild Beasts, OutKast, Chic, Beck, Caribou ... they all were there at the weekend.

But Bestival has been just as much about the battle of the footwear as the battle of the bands during the four-day music jamboree.

Tights , such an important fashion staple of the summer, seemed to just about shade it from ankle socks .

These colourful revellers certainly show the wide spectrum of footwear on display at the Isle of Wight festival with tights' versatility once again to the fore.

The tights didn't just extend to the audience, however. Chvrches' lead singer Lauren Mayberry could also be seen sporting them on Sunday.

Party-goers breathed a sigh of relief that they didn't have to get their wellies out for Glastonbury-style monsoons.

Instead, the 55,000-capacity venue at the popular Robin Hill theme park in Downend, near Newport, Isle of Wight, rocked to the sound of some spectacular music to fair weather.

Lethal Bizzle, La Roux and Sam Smith were other stand-out performers.

Westwood speaks up for Scottish independence

Legendary designer Dame Vivienne Westwood has told the fashion industry that an independent Scotland could be a 'model to us all'.

Queen of Tartan Westwood, 73, clad mostly in black, posed for the cameras with fellow designer Andreas Kronthaler in a tartan jacket, kilt and black knee-length socks at the ninth annual Scottish Fashion Awards in London on Monday.

The designer believes an independent Scotland would be a very 'people-friendly' society.

Also pictured is the founder of the event, Tessa Hartmann, who had the pleasure of inducting Westwood into the events Hall of Fame to mark her contribution to the fashion industry.
