Lesson time at SockShop HQ

Back in February I featured six Christmas novelty sock designs drawn by pupils from a local secondary school, which were shortlisted for our ‘design a sock’ competition. The designs were sent off to be made into samples so that we could get an idea of which ones worked best on an actual sock, then choose an overall winner.
One man. One giant sock. Two marathons.

The hard work and commitment it takes to run a marathon means that many people don’t ever tackle it, while some attempt it as a once-in-a- lifetime event. But for Stephen Peel, a 60-year-old hairdresser from Ashton, one just wasn’t enough. He has run two marathons – London and Paris - in the space of a week. Dressed as a sock.
"So this season!" – The design of the sock

So the design team have read the right books, completed their homework, and now the design work can begin! At this point, I have been reliably informed that the process should go rather quickly and smoothly, as long as enough research has been done!
From mood boards to manufacture: The evolution of a sock

Socks; you pick out your faves, buy them then wear them til holes start to form, then replace them with another pair. But what, if anything, draws you to buying what you buy? Is it colour? Design? Material? Do you like a plain sock, patterned or maybe novelty?
What we do with SOCKSHOP'S odd socks
Posted by Katrina
So we have already (in a rather tongue-in-cheek way) addressed the mystery of the missing socks in this blog. But what we didn’t look at is how SOCKSHOP is affected by the phenomenon.
Get ready, get set, go!

Wait, so socks and sandals are cool now?

There are very few certainties in this ever-changing world of heat waves in March and snow in April. But there are some things we can be certain of: death, taxes, and that socks and sandals aren’t cool.
“If I knew you were comin’ I’d’ve baked a cake…”

This week the SOCKSHOP team have put on their aprons, rolled up their sleeves, dusted off their cook books and baked up a storm, all in the name of charity.
SOCKSHOP imitates art: Part 2

A few weeks ago we featured a blog post documenting our homage to Sheffield artist John Dowswell and his Project Odd pieces. Since then John has been in touch, and has very kindly given permission to showcase some images from his collection – to show you, and us, how it’s meant to be done!

Socks in action
Posted by Katrina
The everyday sock is a simple creature, worn for comfort, warmth and convenience by, I think it’s fair to say, a large majority of people. But in this world there also exists other socks, which are designed and made to keep up with the ever-increasing demands of people who take part in extreme activities - either for sport or charity.

The phenomenon of the missing sock
Posted by Katrina
Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster, the giant black cat that roams the British countryside; there are many myths that to this day cause strong divides between the believers and the sceptics. But there is a phenomenon that unites one and all, mystifying people for centuries, stumping scientists and generally causing widespread confusion and head-scratching - the phenomenon of the missing sock. There have been countless reports of ‘missing sock experiences’ over the years, with rumours of governmental investigations into the disappearances resurfacing every once in a while.
The rise of the charity sock

Giving to charity; it’s that thing you do when you’re feeling kind/flush/guilty/upset about particular wrongdoings that have flashed across your TV screen. You can climb a mountain, cycle across a country (or, for those of us who are too lazy, sponsor people that do!) or even just throw a few coins in a bucket to give charities a bit of a boost.

Students wow us with their Christmas designs!

Now I know you’re probably sick of the sight of anything Christmassy, but I had to share these! We challenged a local secondary school to draw a Christmas novelty sock for us, with the winning design being sold as part of our collection next winter.
Imagine a world without socks

Today I found out that Albert Einstein, ‘the father of modern physics’, one of the most prolific intellects of modern history, did not wear socks.

Sarah Tunnicliffe. You may not know her name, you might be able to place her face, but if you are a SOCKSHOP shopper, you will definitely be familiar with her legs.
