What are bamboo socks?

Bamboo socks turn up everywhere now and get talked about a lot, some of it fair and some of it overstated. This is a plain explanation of what they actually are, what they are good at, and where the claims get ahead of themselves.

What they actually are

Bamboo socks are made from bamboo viscose, a soft fibre produced from bamboo pulp. The bamboo is broken down and spun into a fine, smooth yarn, usually blended with a little stretch fibre so the sock holds its shape. The result is a fabric that feels closer to something like modal or a very soft cotton than to anything rough or plant-like.

What they feel like

The main thing people notice is how soft they are. The yarn is smooth and fine, so there is no scratch and no heavy seam digging in. They tend to feel cool against the skin rather than warm, which is part of why they suit warmer weather and closed shoes.

What they are good for

Three things bamboo genuinely does well:

  • Breathability. The fabric lets air move, so feet stay cooler and fresher through the day.
  • Moisture. Bamboo moves moisture away from the skin rather than holding it against your foot, which helps with damp and with odour.
  • Sensitive skin. Because the fibre is smooth and soft, a lot of people with easily irritated skin find bamboo more comfortable than rougher fabrics.

That combination makes them a good everyday sock, and a particularly good choice for work, travel and long days on your feet.

Where the claims get overstated

You will often see bamboo sold as naturally antibacterial. The honest position is that the manufacturing process changes the fibre a fair bit, so the bigger antibacterial claims are worth taking with a pinch of salt. What you can rely on is the softness, the breathability and the way it handles moisture. Those are real and they are reason enough to wear them, without needing the marketing on top.

Who they suit

Bamboo socks suit most people, but they are especially worth trying if you get hot or sweaty feet, if your skin is easily irritated, if you spend long days in closed shoes, or if you simply want a softer sock than your usual cotton pair.

How to look after them

Wash them at a normal temperature, around 30 to 40 degrees, and avoid a very hot wash which is hard on the fibre. Skip the fabric softener, it coats the yarn and reduces the breathability you bought them for. Air dry where you can. Looked after properly they hold their softness and shape for a long time.

Beyond socks

The same qualities that make bamboo good for socks make it work for other things worn close to the skin. If you get on with bamboo socks, bamboo underwear is worth a look for the same softness and breathability.

The short version

Bamboo socks are a soft, breathable, moisture-friendly everyday sock, good for warm weather, closed shoes and sensitive skin. Take the antibacterial claims lightly and buy them for the comfort, which is real. If you want to see the range, our bamboo socks are a good place to start.
